| DO YOU KNOW? |
- |
Thailand is a Buddhist country where Buddha images are held sacred. Sacrilegious acts are punishable by imprisonment even if committed by foreign visitors. |
- |
Thai
people hold their King and Queen and Royal family in great reverence
and will not tolerate disrespectfulness by foreigners. |
- |
Generally Thai women are conservative, so do not touch them without their consent. |
- |
Dress properly when entering a Buddhist temple. Mini skirt and shorts are not allowed. Take your shoes off before going inside the hall of worship. Ladies must not on any account touch a Buddhist monk, nor give things directly to him or receive things directly from him. |
- |
Intimacies between man and woman should not be shown in public. Sunbathing in the nude is prohibited. |
- |
Traditionally, Thai people greet each other with a WAI (by pressing the palms together at the chest). If someone WAIS you, you should WAI back (except when WAI-ED by a child). |
- |
When addressing their first name; use the title ‘Khun’ for adults. |
- |
Thai people smile to express gladness and happiness, to thank for small services, to return the WAI (a way of greeting). |
- |
Do not touch a person’s head, nor ruffle his or her hair. The head is the noblest part of the body. |
- |
It is incorrect to put your feet on the table while sitting. If you do this, a sincere apology should be offered immediately. Never use your foot to point things out or to touch any part of the body of anyone, this is considered rude. |
- |
Entering a Thai house, you are expected to remove your shoes. |
| |
|
|
|
Once you
arrive in Thailand (Bangkok) you can take a taxi to your hotel or guesthouse.
Bangkok is famous for its traffic, however taking a taxi to your destination
should be fine.
In Bangkok, the best mode of transportation is a motorbike. It is fast and cheap for short distances.
|
|
You can
start your sightseeing at Royal Grand Palace, see the Emerald Buddha
at Wat Phra Kaew and then go to the Temple of Golden Buddha in Chinatown.
A real "must" is to visit Chatuchak, the Weekend Market! When
shopping in Bangkok a local-native person may want help you, but be
careful of con artists, especially tuk tuk drivers who speak good english.
|
Nightlife
in the city is fantastic! You have go-go bars, discos, ladyboy cabaret
shows on Patpong Rd, food stalls and many restaurants. While Bangkok
at night is very safe, please be careful of card game scams.
|
After a few days in Bangkok you may be tired and want to get out of the rat race. I recommend going north to the mountains of Chiang Mai where you can enjoy the friendly hill tribe atmosphere, do some trekking, bamboo rafting, white water rafting or rent motorcycles.
|
|
See a waterfall, eat some grasshoppers, drink some Mehkong Thai local whisky-Lao Kao, or have a cold Singha beer. Do not forget to visit Phrae and Nan Province for nature and clean spirit!
|
|
After experiencing
the north, head south to the island beaches such as Koh Samui, Koh Tao,
Koh Phangan, Similan Island, Phi Phi Island and Krabi. You can enjoy
kayaking, sun tanning or just relaxing on the beach.
The sea is tranquil, calm, and beautiful, and the locals are very laid back.
|
And you may even get to see some of the famous Muay Thai Boxing between Thais and Farangs at the local stadium and fitness gyms! While walking or relaxing on the beach, find your love with a Thai girl, or boy!
