Bangkok is Thailand's largest urban area and the kingdom's capital city. Known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, or more commonly Krung Thep (meaning "city of angels"), Bangkok is by far Thailand's most densely populated city with about 12 million people and is Thailand's commercial economic center and headquarters to the majority of Thai banks and financial institutions. Inexpensive public bus transportation makes for easy traveling within Bangkok as well as reaching all other provinces. The expanding network of skytrain and subway lines are very popular. Suvarnabhumi Airport became Bangkok's official international airport, replacing Don Mueang in 2006.
