Phuket City (Phuket Town) is located in the east-central area of Phuket Island, and serves as the Provincial capital of Phuket. Phuket city is Phuket island's largest municipality and largest port area where the primary fishing fleet is based. The Old Town section is comprised of streets bordered by buildings dating back to the colonial area that display the architecture of a rich Sino-Portuguese history. The central market area serves as the local "songtiew" open-air bus hub for most of the coastal towns and villages, well worth experiencing for only a few baht per direction. Shopping is readily available along the street in quaint shophouses stocked with household wares, fabrics and fascinating collections of hardware and tools.
